Nepal - Community Development

Nepal - Community Development, exciting new placements available: Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan jungle

Recent visits to Pastor David have resulted in a range of volunteering opportunities opening which are described below. Volunteers are given the opportunity to share their skills, develop their faith and enhance the lives of children and communities.

START YOUR OWN NEPAL ADVENTURE.  4 WEEK-4 MONTHS

We can offer a 4 week + tailored program for you to get really emersed in Nepal going to different locations and experiencing life in Nepal.

This would involve an initial stay in Kathmandu, staying and helping in the children’s orphanage and getting involved with other projects in Kathmandu. This would then be combined with a trip to Chitwan to stay with a Nepalese family, join in with the locals, help at the local school’s jungle trips and experience the genuine hospitality of the local people.

The trip can be tailored to your needs/skills and time in Nepal.

Ideal for students in their gap year, or older people taking time out. Come as a small group or recommended two friends together so you can share experiences. (Singles can be accommodated) Program runs between October and May.

More Volunteering Opportunities below.

Helping in the Children’s orphanage.

Pastor David and his wife Maria have 15 children in their Christian home.  Everyday Help is needed in many areas including assisting with homework, help with conversational English, help using computers and developing arts and crafts. The older children would benefit from a mentor sharing life experiences and guiding them on future job opportunities.

When the children are at school there is an opportunity to get involved with community projects and visit areas of interest in Kathmandu

Women’s tailoring project: A tailoring project to train marginalised women learn how to sew, cut cloth, and make clothes is successfully running in Kathmandu. When the training is complete the women are offered the opportunity to start their own business by receiving a small microloan and getting training in how to run a business.

We would love your help if you have sewing skills and/or can help with microfinance program which aims to help these women start a new business This will involve helping them with business planning, approaching their customers and how to make money.

Teaching English in Nepal is a great experience, volunteers get the opportunity to teach the students who are eager to improve their conversational English skills. English is the prime language used in schools where they learn to read and write English but are poor at speaking the language.  Volunteers can assist local teachers in either Kathmandu or Chitwan community primary school.

If you have any additional skills in extra curricula activities like teaching games, music, painting, singing, dancing, yoga, martial arts etc then you are most welcome and encouraged to apply these skills.

Church Ministry outreach program The HFN has good connections within the Christian churches of Nepal. For individual volunteers or church groups who want to make a difference and increase their awareness of the Christian community a tailormade Christian missionary programme can be put together. Visit different churches, join prayer groups, teach at church, share your testimony. Areas of need include Pastor training, equipping, and supporting leaders to teach their own people. In addition, pastor David is actively involved in helping Christian rural communities, delivering Bibles, food provisions and other items to improve health and conditions.  For more information and to explore how you, or your group could help please talk to us.

Agriculture. - Organic farm projects.

Volunteers with an interest in agriculture could assist a local group with their city farm plots. In addition, there is an opportunity to get involved with other rural areas, for example, near the Chitwan jungle, where the soil is very fertile.  Learn how they currently do eco-farming and help with new ideas to increase production.

Chitwan-Madi. Jungle village

volunteers have the chance to join the village community in a village in Chitwan-Madi near the jungle and border with India. Here you can fully immerse yourself in Nepali culture living with a Nepalese family and share ideas.

Volunteers can learn about traditional farming, enjoy some jungle treks, help in the village school, and experience the genuine hospitality of the village community. The local people would welcome sharing skills e.g., health, cooking, arts and crafts, construction etc. This is a chance to get involved, join the local people, and help where you can.

Community Development- Himalayan foothills

In a village in the Himalayan foothills, pastor David has helped the community rebuild and recover from the 2015 earthquake. The area is of outstanding beauty nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, but it is extremely poor. Tin houses have been erected, replacing the more traditional two storey houses and many families are now cramped into bedrooms with 4 to 5 people in each room. The main work in the villages is building houses, and agriculture terraced farming. The people need help with agriculture, there is a shortage of labour, no money for investment, and everything is done by hand. In this area we hope to start a community project, ideas need developing with the local people. The accommodation for volunteers here is very basic. A trip here is not for the faint hearted but as part of a program could be an invaluable experience.
