Medical Placements
Most years, Christians Abroad sends out 3-4 medical electives to either Kenya or Nepal, and they all have a great time as well as fulfilling their university placement requirements.
What Christians Abroad provides are grass roots community medical placments that many who have volunteered with us consider as unique.
This is what Joe had to say after his placement in early 2026 to Kenya, Kitengela,
"My medical elective at Kitengela Sub-County Hospital was an outstanding and highly rewarding clinical experience. My time in the Emergency Room gave me excellent exposure to a wide array of acute presentations, allowing me to actively manage trauma, wound care, and critical medical emergencies like sepsis and DKA under the supervision of the hosting Kenyan clinicians. A clear highlight of the placement was my rotation on the labour ward, culminating in the incredibly memorable experience of helping to deliver a baby. The local healthcare team was welcoming and supportive, offering fantastic, hands-on lessons in clinical adaptability and effective patient care in a fast-paced environment.I was also very honoured to help with some medical education to healthcare students in the classroom and also met many Kenyan students out on their clinical placements at the hospital.
The cultural immersion was equally successful, anchored by a fantastic homestay with a local Kisii family. This arrangement gave me a warm, authentic introduction to daily Kenyan life and a genuine connection to the community. I thoroughly enjoyed embracing the regional culture through its food, regularly sharing meals of fresh tilapia, traditional greens, roasted goat, and the everyday staple, ugali. Navigating daily routines with my host family was a joy and really highlighted the exceptional warmth of Kenyan hospitality.
The placement also offered uplifting community and spiritual connections. Sundays became a highlight of my week, spent visiting various congregations and enjoying fellowship with other Christians. Experiencing the vibrant, energetic services of local Kenyan churches alongside the deeply inspiring worship at a Congolese refugee church added a wonderful dimension to my trip. Ultimately, this elective was a fantastic experience, delivering an ideal balance of robust clinical development, rich cultural education, and meaningful community integration. Thanks a lot!"
Christians Abroad also arranges Medical Professional placements through our Nepal partner, INF at their Pokhara hospital that treats people with leprosy, and there is also limited opportunity at this hospital for medical electives too. For example in 2025, a UK palliative care staff nurse helped train local staff and set up the hospital's palliative care ward. We have yet to send anyone to the world renowned TB mission hospital in Jordan, but the opportunity remains open!
