Lecturers, Tumaini University, Moshi, Tanzania
Faculty of Nursing (with Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College)

Moshi kilimanjaroMrs Maryceline Msuya, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, writes:

"Tumaini University functions under the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania to provide much-needed educational opportunities for young people in a Christian environment. Our Nursing Faculty educates nurses to bachelor's at degree level in a three-year programme. Our nursing students are Tanzanians who have already completed their four-year nurse/midwifery course and have had some working experience. This degree programme began in 1999, in response to an identified need for nurse leaders with an orientation in community health.

Our first four graduates are working in senior positions in Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre. While there is a shortage of qualified nurses in Tanzania, we identified that there is also a need for the nursing profession to develop leaders who can advocate for needed change. Currently there are only four nursing degree programmes in Tanzania, producing about 10 graduates annually. Our faculty as a small number of students, currently only a total of 12 students in the three years, but we hope to have increased numbers of students from September this year.

We are currently facing a major problem with a shortage of suitably qualified nurse lecturers. There are very few Tanzanian nurses with bachelor's or master's degrees, so it has not been possible to recruit local staff for the nursing subjects, apart from the Dean and two part-time staff. We especially need help in the following subject areas: Advanced Nursing Science Nursing a leadership and management Community health nursing Nursing research Nursing education We are requesting your assistance to identify nurse educators with an educational level of Bachelor's degree or above, who would be willing to assist us full-time for a period of at least one year. We would be able to provide accommodation for such a person".

Tasks

These might include teaching and all co-ordinating relevant courses, conducting the examinations, conducting research, supervising student research and students in clinical settings, as well as participating in College/University meetings. Precise tasks would be by agreement with the Faculty and would depend on offered skills, shortage areas, and current priorities.

Requirements

Minimum BSc Nursing or equivalent degree, with Masters or above preferred, under 75 years of age, available for one year minimum. Local training in Swahili can be given (teaching is in English).

Further details

The college is situated in Moshi in northern Tanzania, very close to Mount Kilimanjaro and the Kenyan border. The town has all main facilities, and nearby Arusha is a major centre with an international airport. There are many leisure opportunities, from walking to swimming, golf, and horse-riding, and a good mixture of expatriates and local professionals in the area. The college is 10-15 minutes from the centre of Moshi by bus. Local health care is available, but any participant would be advised to take out medical insurance (Christians Abroad and can arrange this). Malaria is the main local health risk and there is also a high incidence of Aids. The College can provide accommodation, electricity and, water and telephone (though international calls must be paid for). The College cannot afford a salary at present, so the lecture would need to be self-supporting.
