Teacher for Shisong, Cameroon

Christians Abroad has been sending professional volunteers to Cameroon since 1983. There are possibilities for medical personnel and Teachers. Volunteer professionals will usually be placed either at Shisong (a regional hospital) or near Bafut (at a centre for the disabled, also with a small hospital). There are schools at both sites.

The institutions are under the supervision of Franciscan Sisters who welcome people of all denominations and faiths - anyone who is in sympathy with their aims. They can provide good safe accommodation with electricity, water, bathroom with shower, kitchen and living room in staff houses about five minutes walk from the Shisong Hospital or on site at Bafut. Facilities might have to be shared (but all single people will have their own bedroom). The hospital cannot pay salaries.

Shisong is in a rural area. Local shops will provide basic food (vegetables and bread, etc), but the hospital also has a good kitchen, well-used to western diets and there is a small town nearby (Kumbo) with reasonable facilities. (The nearest town on most atlases will be Bamenda). Mobile phones have just become available and there is a nearby internet cafe. The hospital itself has internet access.  The area is English-speaking, but French is spoken in much of the rest of the Cameroon.

Terms and conditions

Christians Abroad will not be the 'employer'. These are voluntary placements supervised by the senior person at each place, from whom tasks will be delegated. It is expected that people will fit in with local timetables and local staff. In all cases evenings and weekends are usually free.

Teaching

Both Shisong and Bafut have need of English teachers. Those in English-speaking areas feel they are at a disadvantage in national terms, but are keen to maintain their skills, particularly as they feel this gives them access to a different part of the international community. As training at the hospitals and some other local further education institutions is in English this helps students get good further education and better jobs. Trained teachers or graduates who can offer some English language practice are welcomed, but the specific placement will be determined on a case by case basis. Those who can offer at least one complete term are preferred - but two or even three terms are better! Accommodation can usually be provided.
