Theology | Teach English in Syria
The Greek-Catholic Archbishop in
Aleppo, northern Syria is looking for an English-speaking volunteer to help students learn English relevant to a Business Administration course. Full board and lodging, transport and pocket money will be provided, and they are looking for a graduate in English, economics, business administration or management. In addition to English, a knowledge of French would help, but is not compulsory.
The volunteer will live in the
centre of the city at the Archbishop’s residence along with other volunteers
from European countries who are helping in the
Dar Basile Institute. The placement is available for one year - two academic years from September 2007 and only suitable for a single person. The Dar Basile Institute has been training 200+ students each year in Tourism since 2001 and is expanding its courses to include business administration.
The new ‘Business Administration Department’ will deliver skills needed for working in a modern business. For this it is clearly helpful to have some additional English language skills.
Aleppo is close to the Turkish border in northern Syria. The city has full modern facilities, including health care, and there are no particular medical concerns in the region. Aleppo has a pleasant climate though it can be hot in summer. This area is far from recent Middle East conflicts, and there are no physical dangers - though people who are able to deal tolerantly with differences in political and religious views will cope more easily. This project clearly helps the minority Christian group to relate to the wider community.
The placement is suitable for Christians of all denominations, though because of the placement it would be expected that any volunteer would be happy to join in with the local Catholic worship. Other possibilities and connections can of course be explored. Arrangements will be made in co-operation with Bishop Mark Jabalé, Bishop of Menevia in Swansea, who has a connection with the work in Syria. Contact
