Theology | College Administrator,
Kongwa, Tanzania
The new Principal of St Philip’s Theological College in Tanzania is looking for an experienced administrator to help him in the development of the college. This post would be ideal for someone who has taken retirement or a career break, but anyone with the right experience who is able to fund themselves will be considered. The work will be varied, and an experienced person would be able to make a significant contribution to the management of the college.
A variety of skills are needed – in management, administration, publicity, finance and even fund-raising – but it is not expected that any one person will have all those skills. The Principal is looking for someone with all-round office and administration skills, who is able to adapt ideas to a very different environment, recognizing the limitations of budget and resources, and use a variety of skills.
Other information
St Philip’s Theological College is one of the two theological colleges of the Anglican Church in Tanzania, catering mainly for those of the more evangelical tradition. It is situated at Kongwa, around 95 km from the national capital of Dodoma. Telephone and email contact are possible, and the environment of the college is friendly and supportive. Other staff will be a mixture of academic and domestic, and there will be a good community and worshipping life. The new Principal is very welcoming and appreciative of external support. A supportive person is needed, able to recognise the difficulties under which the Principal works – few resources, sometimes conflicting demands from students, bishops and academic pressures. The post is most suitable to a single person, though an accompanying spouse would be welcome (especially if the spouse could teach theology), but the post is independent and the person beat-suited will be appointed).
There are no local schools of UK standard and the post is not considered suitable for a family with school age children. College staff and students will all speak English since the diploma and degree classes are taught in English. It would be useful to learn some Kiswahili for communication and travel outside the college. There is a government district hospital at Kongwa, and also private facilities. Major cases are referred to Dodoma. Volunteers would be advised to take out private medical insurance. The climate is hot and dry for most of the year, with a very short rainy season from November to April. Tanzania is a peaceful country with little inter-racial or inter-religious conflict, though there are significant numbers of Muslims in the northern and coastal areas. It is one of the poorest countries in Africa, but also one in which there is the least disparity between rich and poor. Roads are slowly being improved and there are good internal air services, but because foreign currency is required for any major repairs there are often delays in servicing or providing equipment or resources. A certain amount of ingenuity is sometimes required!
Conditions of Service
Free accommodation will be provided, with water and electricity and a college vehicle would be available sometimes. The college will not be able to pay a salary. There are no age limits. The appointed person will be expected to participate in the life of the college and will need to be happy in its evangelical Anglican ethos and worship – but need not be an Anglican. The requirement is long-term, but it is recognised that a self-supporting person will have limits on the time they can spend in Tanzania.
One year would be ideal, but anything over a six month period would be considered. Contact
