 Doctors/Surgeons for Murgwanza Hospital,
Ngara, Tanzania The Anglican Church in Ngara, Tanzania needs volunteer doctors on a short or medium term basis for their 150 bed district hospital. Murgwanza
Hospital was built in 1935 by Australian missionaries on a hill outside Ngara in Tanzania and was designated a district hospital in 1965. The church retains ownership but some funding is supplied by government. There are both curative and preventative care services provided, including surgery, primary health care and an HIV/AIDS village, hospital and home-based care programme. Facilities are limited by the availability of funds, and the 150 beds are often occupied by double that number of people. They need both general and specialist medical staff for short and medium term placements - they prefer a six month minimum placement but might consider other offers. Three years’ experience is also preferred but more important is an ability to adapt to limited resources and a knowledge of older drug regimes and a flexibility in approach to staff responsibilities and methodology. The hospital
cannot provide a salary but can supply accommodation with electricity and water (not 24 hrs), some local transport, a local induction for new arrivals and some help with the basics of Kiswahili. There are some expatriates in the area - missionaries and a few exploring mining possibilities, but an ability to cope with isolation and relate to local people is essential. The climate is modified by altitude but the average temperature is still between 25 and 32EC. There are two rainy seasons and it can be humid before rains. It is important to have medical insurance for any health care beyond self-care or that by possible colleagues. This and an up-to-date criminal records check are necessary before confirmation of appointment. There would be possibilities for a spouse to be involved in medical, educational or church work. Christian faith is essential, and though denomination does not matter it is helpful to be able to worship and work within an Anglican setting. There are possibilities of involvement in local church activities, from choirs to youth work or study groups, but these are neither required nor expected. Contact
