 English Teachers for Japan
Recruitment on behalf of the Methodist Church. Starting date negotiable. The aim of the project is to provide teachers for junior and high schools associated with the Council of Co-operative Mission (CoC) in Japan. The teaching commitment is likely to be less than that expected in an English secondary school (as little as 12 hours in some schools) but class size may be larger (up to 40).
Key Responsibilities
Teachers will actively support Christian witness within the school as well as contributing to one of the following subjects: English Language and Literature, Economics, Social Welfare, Christian Education and Bible Study. It will also be expected that appointed teachers support the spiritual life of the school by leading occasional assemblies or chapel services, and possibly weekends for Christian students or staff. Profile of Applicant Essential
A minimum qualification is a degree in one of the subjects to be taught, a teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent), and at least one year’s direct classroom experience. A TEFL qualification is preferred.
Christian Commitment
As a minimum expectation, Christians Abroad are looking for candidates with evidence of Christian commitment who offer their knowledge, enthusiasm, relationship skills and integrity as a contribution to the place in which they work.
Personal Skills
The successful applicant will be working and living in a culture very different from his own, and will thus be expected to have professional and personal qualities which demonstrate adaptability, tolerance and an inclination to learn and share as well as to give. It is hoped that he will foster healthy working and social relationships, which will contribute to this atmosphere, and he will need to show evidence of creativity and commitment to his professional skills and development.

Recommendation for appointment are made within three days of the interview by letter. Recommended candidates are then referred to the church in Japan, which has the final say. The church will have been contacted before UK interviews have been arranged, and candidates' details will have been sent. Appointments are made by individuals schools, who will be circulated with the candidate's details by the church office in Japan. It is very unwise to think of resigning at this early stage, as even if candidates are approved at both ends there may not be a vacancy immediately. Contact
