Medical Practitioner for Chivhu General Hospital, Chivhu, Zimbabwe

This hospital is a major element in the Mustard Seed project, which concentrates on AIDs victims in Zimbabwe. They are looking for a medical practitioner, preferably with minor surgical skills and able to administer this small hospital.

They would prefer a reasonable termed placement of one year or more, but an initial shorter-term placement would be considered to give feed-back and enable more detailed descriptions of medical work to be given. Duties will be both clinical and administrative, as the doctor is likely to be the only registered medical practitioner at the hospital - currently local nurses perform many duties perhaps better done by doctors.

Clinical duties include:

  • attending to in patients and outpatients; admissions ward rounds, on call

  • health programmes for TB, AIDS etc and education work in same areas

  • theatre work to the doctor's competence

  • outreach to rural clinics

  • post-mortems

Administrative duties include:

  • supervision of nursing staff

  • acting as district medical officer as assigned by Provincial Medical Director

  • writing medical reports

  • attending/organising/leading workshops

Further information

Chivhu is 146 km south of Harare on the main road south to South Africa. Free accommodation will be provided two or three bedroom bungalow with electricity and running water. Phones, email, banks and local shops are available. There will be a local salary, at the level of government doctors, currently Z$13 million. The local climate is mild, with cool nights in the winter. English is used as the hospital language but willingness to learn Shona would be appreciated.

Married couples would be welcome and there are many opportunities in voluntary or educational work for a partner. It is expected that the post-holder will link to a local church (where duties allow) but no particular denomination is preferred. Local churches include Anglican, Methodist, Roman Catholic, Salvation Army, Baptist and several Pentecostal groups.
