Class teachers for years Years 6 & 4, Maseru, Lesotho
Maseru English Medium Preparatory School is looking for class teachers able to teach mixed ability classes of between 20 and 30, mainly Basotho pupils, in Maseru, capital of Lesotho. Minimum requirements are a BEd degree or BA/BSc with P.G.C.E. Two years teaching experience and Q.T.S. would be preferred. The positions are available from January or September 2008 with the length of contract negotiable and renewable by mutual consent. The school has a teaching staff of 21, Basotho and other nationals. A job description and copy of the school prospectus are available on request.
Enthusiasm, energy, flexibility ad a willingness to work effectively with the available resources in local circumstances would be the deciding factor in making this appointment. The school is non-denominational and has pupils of a number of faiths. However, because a strong personal commitment to the advancement of education in Lesotho is essential, applicants require a strong vocation. Personal faith would be evidence of this. There are many local Christian-based activities and several teachers are involved in Christian outreach with local orphanages. The school hall is used by the C.R.C. church on Sundays. Major denominations are present in Maseru and would provide opportunities for voluntary service and involvement in group activities.
Furnished housing, with heating, electricity and water will be provided, along with beginning and end of contract flights, and comprehensive medical insurance. A local salary of 116,532 Maloti p.a. is offered (c£9,000) subject to local income tax (34%). The Lesotho currency has parity with the South African Rand. There is also a small inducement bonus paid in US dollars designed to cover pension contributions etc.
The school is situated in a residential area close to the centre of Maseru, within five minutes walk of the main shopping area. South African towns are within driving distances (Ladybrand I hour, Bloemfontein 2 hours, on good roads). There are many opportunities for leisure activities, both cultural and sporting. There are expatriates in the area, many involved in education or development charities.
Single or married people would be accepted, though for those with children there might be an accommodation issue. Children would receive a free education at the school and at Machabeng College for those over 11. There might be teaching opportunity for a spouse – otherwise there are many volunteering possibilities in the area.
Lesotho is a small country, and apart from the area around Maseru is largely rural and mountainous. In health terms there are no major concerns, though HIV is a major issue for local people. Good medical facilities are available, though many would prefer to go to South Africa. The climate is hot and dry in summer but because of altitude can be wet and quite cold in winter.
