The Cameroon Association for the Protection and Education of the Child (CAPEC) would like volunteers to teach in its school for poor children in a village close to the city of Yaounde. The total cost would be £1800 for one month or £2100 for three months. Air fares vary according to season, however.
Volunteers would be expected to help children in their school work, teach English and basic IT. They would also be involved in sporting and outdoor activities and counselling the children on HIV/ AIDS and sex education. Volunteers with medical or nursing experiences would be of great help in the centre’s infirmary. Volunteers would also spend time with orphan children, assisting or planning activities based on the needs of the orphanage. Volunteers might plan sports and games, help in art or music lessons, or organize clubs.

CAPEC provides accommodation with modern conveniences, all meals and airport pickup for volunteers. Travel from home to the school is by local bus or taxi. French would be an advantage, though many people also speak English. A Volunteer program Coordinator is responsible for volunteers’ work and welfare. No qualifications are necessary beyond a desire to love and help the children. An in-country orientation program is undertaken with all volunteers. There are several hospitals and private clinics in Yaounde which is a twenty minute bus ride away.
Please note: This is not a specifically Christian organisation but has Christians working in it. Christians Abroad has not yet sent volunteers to CAPEC but we have good references from other volunteers.
The total cost is composed of the return air fare, tourist visa and travel and health insurance, the cost of food and accommodation and the Christians Abroad administration fee.
CAPEC has its own website where more information can be found. Go to www.capecam.org
