Volunteers stay with a family with children as their host. Volunteers have access to toilet and bath, kitchen, lounge, television, radio, electricity, water, dining table and table sets. There are some places of work and residence without electricity and running water so you may do without television. In most cases, it's one volunteer to one room. Occasionally, there may be two volunteers to one room. The host families are consistently screened with their information updated on a regular basis to make sure they meet RVO standards. Host families are responsible for providing the volunteer breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. In some instances, due to the distance between the project site and home, volunteers are provided with a lunch pack.
You might find yourself washing clothes with your hands, cooking with a firewood and discussing politics or religion in candlelight. It is a unique opportunity to become deeply immersed in Ghanaian culture.
Orphanage work
The job responsibilities of orphanage volunteers in Ghana depend on the need of the orphanage as well as the skills and interests of the volunteers. However, the volunteers will be involved in the following tasks:
• Teach basic English
• Develop creative programs such as dance, arts, music, etc.
• Clean, cook and serve food
• Organize physical and sports activities
• Assist the staff in counselling the children
There are no specific qualifications required for orphanage projects in Ghana. However, volunteers must have love for the children and willingness to share their time and compassion with patience and flexibility.
Volunteer will also have 24/7 access to our office in Ghana and mobile number of our coordinators. Moreover, head of the orphanage serves as a local contact person for volunteers. Our staffs also visit volunteers in each 1-2 week interval as a part of the program.
Teaching work
Volunteers can:
• Teach conversational English, Maths, or Science to students age between
2 -10 in primary schools and 11-16 in junior secondary schools
• Read literature and improve the low comprehension level and poor pronunciation of students
• Provide theoretical and practical assistance and aide the teachers
• Interact with the students
There are no specific qualifications for the teaching projects in Ghana except fluency in English and love for the children.
Healthcare projects
The medical centres in Ghana are resource poor, and understaffed. There is a great need of efficient hands to help the doctors, nurses and medical staffs in treating the ever-growing number of patients in round the clock busy health centres and hospitals.
A volunteer's role can range from observational to basic assistance, depending on their level of knowledge. Volunteers will be working with doctors, spending time in various departments of a busy hospital like Gynaecology, Neurology, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Surgery. Changing bandages, taking blood pressure and contributing to education about basic prevention are examples of how volunteers engage in this type of placement. An important element of these placements is learning about healthcare practices in different cultures.
Health volunteers must have the proof of qualification as a health professional, medical student, doctor or nurse.
More information about can be obtained from RVO's own website at www.robborg.org
Cost: The total coat includes airfares, visa, insurance, accommodation, food and necessary local transport and the Christians Abroad administration fee. Air fares vary according to season, however.
Please note: Christians Abroad has not yet recruited any volunteers for this project, but has received excellent references from other volunteers. Though not specifically Christian, RVO has many Christians working for it.
