Teaching, Health Care, Working with Children or Animals in Kenya

altVolunteering opportunities in teaching, healthcare, environmental and construction work, caring for orphans and veterinary experience in Kenya is organised by Nairobi based Gracepatt Ecotours. Overall cost for a month’s stay is approximately £2500.

altAccommodation and meals are with host families. Volunteers teach at community based schools and government primary schools in urban and rural areas of the country.  The students range in age from 4 to 13. You can help them with conversational English, basic math, science, arts & crafts, board games, playground games, sports like soccer and running, music, and any other talents you wish to share. The school schedule is Monday-Friday from 8am to 3pm. All classes are taught in English.

Healthcare volunteers work in hospitals, small clinics, orphanages and shelter homes to assist the staff in the treatment of patients. They can educate and guide these disadvantaged people about sanitation, hygiene, nutrition and provide first aid to people with small injuries.  Generally you will assist/support the doctor/dentists or clinician in the normal routine of medical work.

In the veterinary program, interns work at an animal "orphanage" near Nairobi which rehabilitates and releases wild animals that have been injured or abandoned into various National Parks within Kenya.

The orphanages are comprised of a home and a school. Once placed, a volunteer could decide to work in either of the departments – cook for the children, feed them, play games, do arts & crafts, sports, and teach English, help with laundry, mop the floor, give those who are sick their medication and soothe them to sleep one at a time. The children are from different backgrounds hence, have different emotional problems in addition to societal effects that range from grinding poverty to HIV/AIDS. Others are from broken homes, where they were physically abused.

Cost: One month, £2500; Three months, £3200. This includes air fares, visa,  insurance, accommodation, meals and the Christiana Abroad administration fee.
