Retrak is a Christian NGO working with people of all faiths or none as a welfare organisation focussing on Street Children at the present time  in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. For some of the projects through Retrak,  you do not have to be a Christian or person of faith but you do have to accept that you would be working with a Christian project and respect their values.

If you would like to develop skills that you have learned or use knowledge that you have acquired to help lift Street Children out of despair and towards a more promising future, then maybe you could offer three - twelve months to working in Kenya, Ethiopia or Uganda. You would be gaining experience, deepening your knowledge and honing skills in working with children and it may change your life and future career direction.

On the other hand, you may be a the end of your career working with children and would like to offer something to those who are most in need.

In either situation, working for Retrak as a young graduate gaining valuable experience or as an older volunteer using some of the experience that you already have, this might be the best next step for you.


1. Support during the application process as you determine whether this is the right decision for you will be provided by CHRISTIANS ABROAD and the initial selection will be carried out by CHRISTIANS ABROAD.

2. Final selection and placement will be at the discretion of Retrak.

3. Preparation before departure will be provided by CHRISTIANS ABROAD.

4. All arrangements re visas, flights, insurance, health checks, CRB checks will be carried out by CHRISTIANS ABROADwho remain responsible for these arrangements.

5. Arrangements for being met at the airport, initial accommodation and orientation will be arranged by Retrak in association with CHRISTIANS ABROAD

6. Supervision and field support will be provided by Retrak. CHRISTIANS ABROAD remains in the background but available during your placement

7. You will be given opportunities to provide feedback to Retrak at the end of your placement and debriefing will be provided by CHRISTIANS ABROAD on your return.


Your contribution to the full cost for three months would be approximately £3000 - £4000 depending on the particular project, timing and circumstance. This sum would include air fare, insurance, security and health checks, accommodation and meals for six - twelve months and all selection, preparation and support costs.CHRISTIANS ABROAD works with STEWARDSHIP  to help you with gift aid recovery to  help with your costs if you are being funded by your Church or friends. Retrak has a sponsorship and fundraising pack to help you raise the funds.

An initial telephone interview will be arranged by David when the appropriateness of any application can be discussed.  If it is felt appropriate a formal face to face interview will take place probably in London. You will need to forward £250 as a deposit which is refundable if you are not offered a placement. You will also need to fund your travel expenses to interview separately.

4. If you are successful at this first interview with CHRISTIANS ABROAD,  arrangements will be made for you to meet with Retrak where a possible placement can be discussed and any final decisions taken about placement and timing.

5. When all is in place,  you will need to make arrangements for providing the balance of the funding which is normally received by CHRISTIANS ABROAD  in two tranches. This allows purchase of air tickets, health checks, CRB checks,  preparation, accommodation etc. to be arranged.
