Christians Abroad is registered Umbrella body for the Home Office Criminal Record Bureau CRB Disclosure service. An umbrella service is for organisations that:

  • Do not wish to pay and register in their own name or,
  • Those who require less than 100 disclosures each year.

If you are recruiting teachers, care workers, medical staff, volunteers to work with children, with the physically or mentally disabled, or (where this is an FSA requirement) for accountants and finance workers in the UK or overseas, this is an crucial safeguard.

From 1st October 2009 the CRB have reduced the fee charged for Standard Disclosures.

POVAFirst check £6.00 (ISA Adult First from 12 October 2009)

Our administration fee remains £15 per application inc VAT and first class P&P.

Important changes - Launch of the Vetting Barring Scheme (VBS) from 12 October 2009

The current barred lists will be replaced by two Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) barred lists. You will have a duty to refer any information about individuals who may pose a risk to children and the vulnerable to the ISA*.

Standard CRB checks are no longer available for posts working with children and the vulnerable.

The key changes are “regulated activity” and examples give by the CRB are:

“Definition of regulated activity: Any activity of a specified nature that involves contact with children or vulnerable adults frequently, intensively and/or overnight. (Such activities include teaching, training, care, supervision, advice, treatment and transportation.)

  • Any activity allowing contact with children or vulnerable adults that is in a specified place frequently or intensively. (Such places include schools and care homes.)

  • Fostering and childcare.

  • Any activity that involves people in certain defined positions of responsibility. (Such positions include school governor, director of children’s services and director of adult social services, and trustee of certain charities.)

‘Regulated activity’ is when the activity is frequent (once a month or more), intensive (takes place on three or more days in a 30-day period) or overnight.”

Summary
If you employ people who have contact with children or vulnerable frequently (once a month or more), intensive (takes place on three or more days in a 30-day period) or overnight from October 12th Standard CRB checks are no longer available for people working with such groups.

From next year, such people must be registered with the ISA to enable them to work.
