Christians Abroad is registered as an 'umbrella body' linked to the "Disclosure" service of the Criminal Record Bureau (CRB). The 'umbrella' service is primarily designed for organisations that do not wish to register in their own name. A new regulation means that organisations making fewer than 100 disclosures each year also have to use an umbrella group.

If you are an agency recruiting teachers, medical staff, volunteers to work in children’s homes or schools, practitioners who will be working with the physically or mentally disabled, or (where this is an FSA requirement) for accountants and finance officers for work in the UK or to send abroad, this is an important service.

In some circumstances we can work with groups for whom local face to face verification is possible (we are located in Brixton, south London).

"Disclosure" is a service run by the CRB to help employers and voluntary organisations make safer recruitment decisions. It allows "registered bodies", using "registered persons" to check the records held by the Police National Computer, the Department of Health, and the Department for Education and Employment. This is now seen as essential part of the recruitment of anyone working with children or vulnerable adults - both for the safety of vulnerable people and for the reputation of the recruiting organisation. There may also be legal consequences if organisations fail to make such checks and something then goes wrong. It is also useful for checking convictions for fraud, etc. for those expected to have financial responsibilities – especially where there may be few local checks. Disclosure is intended to screen people before confirmation of appointment and will be available at different levels according to the amount of unsupervised contact and the nature of that contact.

The cost of this service is £20 (£15 for registered charities) including VAT per person for the administration of the scheme through Christians Abroad, plus a fee* paid to the CRB through Christians Abroad for salaried staff. Volunteers only pay the service fee.

* CRB fees for salaried staff are £31 for Standard Disclosures and £36 for Enhanced Disclosures. Volunteers do not pay this fee.
