Teaching, Healthcare, Children or Administration in India

alt Teaching and healthcare opportunities in India are provided by the Society for Educational & Environmental Development (SEED) near Calcutta. A boys' home, a health clinic and an office are all in need of volunteers. Cost: I month approximately £1600;  three months, £2000. The total cost includes air fares, visa, insurance, accommodation, subsistence and a donation towards the cost of Christians Abroad administration.

Volunteers will be involved in teaching in the boys' home, including drawing and painting and computer literacy. Administration work is available at the SEED office, and healthcare work at the SEED clinic. Accommodation, meals and modern amenities are provided in the boys' home. Accommodation and electricity will be provided free of charge, but there will be some charge for water and meals. Staff will meet volunteers at Calcutta airport and drive them to the project. No qualifications are needed, although if you are qualified, trained or experienced then the project will seek to make use of your skills. There are no age restrictions.

You will be responsible to a coordinator of your specific project. There will be other international volunteers working alongside you so you will not be alone. All volunteers will be given orientation in India about the organisation, the project and its activities. You will be expected to dress modestly. There are no major health concerns or security issues. You will not be more than 30 minutes by car away from a town. All projects are located within four kilometres of the central office in Calcutta and transport and communication systems are good. Although Bengali and Hindi are the local languages, you will be able to make yourself understood in English. Volunteering within these projects is available to people of any faith or none, although there is a local Christian community and there are opportunities for you to join in if you so wish - perhaps by joining the choir or helping with the youth club.
