Childcare, teaching, healthcare and construction skills in Kenya.
Volunteer Hope Africa runs projects in Watamu on the coast, Nyeri in a rural setting, and in Nairobi requiring help in an orphanage, a school, a dispensary and in construction of new facilities. One month would cost approximately £2000, three months £2600. Placements for up to six months are possible. The estimated cost includes the air fare, health and travel insurance, visa, food and accommodation and a donation to Christians Abroad towards administration costs.
Beatrice W. Njambi, the Project Director, describes the aims of the projects as being “to eradicate poverty and to
meet the needs of the poor in our society.”Volunteers can choose from the following activities:
- Helping in the orphanage, taking children on trips out, doing sports, art & craft and counselling work;
- Teaching any subject, but especially IT at primary or secondary level;
- Helping in the dispensary and caring for sick children.
- Assisting with plumbing, masonry, carpentry or electrical work
- Working in establishing and running a library.
- HIV / AIDS Projects – Community outreach where the Volunteers will join health workers from the hospitals to which they will be attached. They will make home visits twice a week advising and counselling those infected and those affected by the disease. The Volunteers will then be helping at the HIV / AIDS Clinics during the rest of the week.
- Short Missions – This is for the Missionaries wishing to spread the word of God in the schools and Churches. The Volunteers will be attached to a church where they will go into schools and preach to the students or have community crusades with the some members of these churches. They will also visit the sick in hospitals around Nairobi, North Coast and other parts of the country and give them hope.
There is a well thought-out induction programme and volunteers stay in a beach house on the coast or with Christian families in the other locations. Accommodation is generally good, although electricity may be in short supply on occasions – this is a common experience in Kenya!
Transport to and from the projects costs less than £1 a day. Good medical facilities are available only one kilometre away. There are many interesting activities for weekend leisure, especially at the coastal site.
